The Tragically Hick is
a
square
dancing set based out of Wentworth County. They have
competed formally
before under previous names including The
Drifters and The Wagon
Wheels but
are currently practicing to compete in the College Royal square
dancing
competition in March.
A
Little Bit About Square Dancing...
Squaredancing
consists of a set which includes four women and four men divided into
four separate couples. The couples
stand at
right angles to each other
throughout the dance forming a square. The position of the couple
determines which
steps and parts of
the dance
each couple
will carry out. The
first or head couple leads the rest of the set and
can usually be
recognized as they tend to have their back facing the band or music
during most of the dance. Square dancing is based on a series of
directions that indicate the moves to be made by
the set which are said
by the set's caller. Each person in the set much follow these
"calls" properly and in time with the music in order
for the dance to
flow properly.

These video clips
are from the Dundalk Dance Competition in June 2007, the most recent
competition thatTheTragically
Hip
(then known as The
Wagon Wheels)
have competed in. The compulsory dance was picked from a draw before
the set went on stage. It is the responsibility of the set to learn and
know all the dances that can be picked for the compulsory and they are
called by the competition's designated caller. The optional dance was
prepared by the set and is called by their own caller. The
Wagon Wheels
placed 5th overall in this competition.
